What does LAPIP Stand For?
When the tissue surrounding a dental implant becomes swollen and inflamed, the implant post can loosen, threatening the stability of your restoration. The LAPIP protocol uses state of the art laser technology to eliminate the infection around the implant and then promote regrowth of healthy soft tissue and bone.
LAPIP stands for Laser Assisted Peri-Implantitis Procedure, a minimally invasive laser treatment to heal and restore implants affected by peri-implantitis. The objective is to remove any infection and encourage both gum tissue regeneration and bone growth.
How Does LAPIP Work?
The LAPIP (not to be confused with LANAP) procedure is a treatment performed by your dentist that specifically targets diseased gum tissue to remove infection and promote cell growth. This creates ideal conditions for the regeneration of gums, bones, and ligaments which all support the dental implant.
A dental laser will destroy the diseased tissue and any titanium corrosion with a failing implant. An ultrasonic scaler then removes any remaining surface residue to provide a healthy surface for adhesion to the implant. The laser also creates a blood clot which includes stem cells to stimulate rapid healing and attachment of healthy surrounding tissue and bone to the implant. Your bite may be adjusted to reduce pressure on the implant during recovery.
Laser therapy for peri-implantitis is a terrific solution. Your dentist can remove the diseased tissue, promote healing, and preserve implants with no pain, less bleeding, and faster recovery times.
LAPIP is usually performed with local anesthesia and requires only one or two appointments of around two hours each. During a LAPIP session, your dentist will:
- Use the dental laser to vaporize diseased tissue and other debris inside the periodontal pocket.
- Remove any damaging contaminants from the surface of the implant with an ultrasonic scaler.
- Gently modify bone tissue.
- Finish with the laser to encourage a blood clot to form around the implant.
During healing, the stem cells naturally promote tissue regeneration. This encourages the tissue to reattach to the implant post and create a more stable and secure connection.
The Benefits of LAPIP for Peri-Implantitis
LAPIP is a less invasive alternative that does not require any incisions or longer recovery times. Some of the benefits of LAPIP include:
- Less bleeding.
- Less pain.
- Minimally invasive.
- Less risk of infection following treatment.
- No surgical incisions.
- Shorter recovery time.
- A high success rate for retaining implants.
- No need to remove the implant for treatment.
- No bone grafting is necessary.
- Usually completed in one office visit.
The LAPIP Protocol Is Highly Effective and Minimally Invasive
- Improved Implant Health- An infection around a dental implant will endanger the stability of your implant-supported restoration. Treatment with LAPIP will regenerate the lost tissue for a more secure foundation and a healthier, natural smile.
- Greater Comfort- In comparison to the traditional method of treating peri-implantitis with a scalpel, LAPIP is performed with no pain, both during the procedure and afterwards. The advanced laser can restore the implant health successfully without incisions.
- Quick, Effective Treatment- LAPIP usually requires only one two-hour visit and a very quick recovery. Traditional treatment for peri-implantitis surgically removes diseased tissue during four hour-long sessions and several follow-up visits. Sometimes bone grafting is also necessary.
