Tooth Extraction in Foggy Bottom

Foggy Bottom is a central DC neighborhood home to George Washington University, the Kennedy Center, and the State Department, and when it comes to tooth extraction, the community trusts the team of periodontists at Precision Periodontics & Implant Dentistry in Washington DC. Tooth extraction is the surgical or simple removal of a tooth that is damaged, decayed, infected, or otherwise compromised beyond the point where it can be restored.

Many of our tooth extraction patients travel from Foggy Bottom — a drive of only about 5 minutes — because they value the combination of periodontal expertise and personalized attention we provide. When a tooth cannot be saved through other treatments, extraction prevents the spread of infection and creates the opportunity for replacement with a dental implant or other restoration.

Frequently Asked Questions

Tooth Extraction FAQ for Foggy Bottom Patients

Why would a periodontist perform a tooth extraction instead of a general dentist?

Periodontists are specialists in the supporting structures of teeth — bone, gums, and ligaments. Complex extractions involving bony impactions, teeth with curved or fused roots, fractured teeth, or extractions requiring immediate bone grafting benefit from a periodontist's advanced surgical training and expertise in tissue management.

What should I expect during recovery after a tooth extraction?

Mild to moderate discomfort and swelling are normal for the first two to three days. Apply ice packs for the first 24 hours, eat soft foods, avoid straws and smoking, and take prescribed medications as directed. Most patients return to normal activities within one to two days. Contact your periodontist if pain worsens after day three.

Should I get a bone graft when I have a tooth extracted?

If you plan to replace the tooth with a dental implant, socket preservation (bone grafting at the time of extraction) is strongly recommended. It costs relatively little when done simultaneously and prevents significant bone loss that would otherwise require more extensive and expensive grafting later.

How soon after extraction can a dental implant be placed?

Timing depends on the clinical situation. Immediate placement (same day as extraction) is possible when bone and soft tissue conditions are favorable. Otherwise, implants are typically placed three to four months after extraction with socket preservation, or four to six months after a standard extraction without grafting.
