Sedation Dentistry in Washington DC and Alexandria VA

We know that many of our patients have anxiety when going to the dentist. For some people, this anxiety can be a big problem. Precision Periodontics and Implant Dentistry offers sedation dentistry options as a result. We have found that many of our patients benefit from sedation option and make the experience of receiving treatment less stressful.

According to the Academy of General Dentistry, around 40 million people in the United State avoid going to the dentist because of fears or anxieties around the visit. We don’t want patients to not come see us as not receiving treatment can lead to some serious oral health issues. Dr. Zalewsky and the team at Precision Periodontics and Implant Dentistry can offer and administer sedation dentistry.

Sedation Dentistry Options

First of all, there are different sedation dentistry options:

  1. Nitrous Oxide-You probably know this as laughing gas. This method is inhaled while wearing a mask. Nitrous oxide can alleviate anxiety and discomfort, and the effects usually wear off soon after the treatment allowing you to go back to your daily activities.
  2. Oral Sedation-There are many types of oral sedation that we offer. This sedation is a deeper option that is better for more serious procedures. This type of sedation is given in small amounts through medications like diazepam. The medication is taken about an hour before the procedure. This type of medication does not provide pain relief, so other medications are used for that.
  3. Intravenous Sedation-For patients who cannot take pills, such as children, an intravenous sedation may be used. This is a deep sedation method and may take longer to wear off compared to other methods.
  4. General Anesthesia-For patients who have extreme anxiety, being unconscious during dental procedures might be necessary. In these cases, sometimes general anesthesia is administered. This type of sedation is generally used for complex procedures like oral surgeries. Under anesthesia, patients are unaware of their surroundings. Anesthesia can take much longer to wear off.

We know that each patient is different in regards to anxiety and treatment needs. This is why we will talk to you at your appointment about whether sedation dentistry is right for you. We will discuss your level of anxiety and talk to you about the different methods and options available.

We offer many high-tech solutions to dental problems from a team of professionals who are dedicated to you. We want our patients to be satisfied with the work we do here. Before we recommend any sedation method, we will evaluate any risks and talk about potential side effects.
