Gum Recession Procedures
There are three main types of gum graft procedures. periodontists Dr. Zalewsky or Dr. Hoge will recommend a procedure based on the unique situation and extent of damage caused by gum disease or other factors. The three procedures are:
- Connective Tissue Grafts
- Free Gingival Grafts
- Pedicle Grafts
Connective tissue grafts – This is the most common type of procedure performed to treat gum recession. It involves cutting a flap of skin from the roof of the mouth and removing tissue from under the flap to be attached to the area in need.
Free gingival grafts – This involves removing the tissue sample directly from the roof of the mouth, rather than from beneath a flap, and attaching it to the treatment area.
Pedicle grafts – Gum tissue is grafted from existing tissue adjacent to the area in need and a pedicle is cut away so that one edge remains attached to the gums. It is then stretched over the exposed root and sutured into place.
Cosmetic Benefits of Gum Grafting
Many people undergo gum surgery to reduce the amount of tooth showing because of gum recession. A gum grafting procedure can restore the gum line and improve the overall health of the mouth.
